5 More from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series 2011

Yesterday, I shared 5 of the 10 original acrylic paintings from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series..

Today, I will be sharing the other 5!

Most of these paintings hang in the Calypso Bar & Grill, here in Virginia Beach, on 11th St. and Atlantic, down at the Oceanfront..

If you are ever in the neighborhood, you should go and check them out!

1. "Throwin' Spray", this abstract surf painting captures the energy of hard cranking, snap off the lip of the wave.

2. "Lip Glide", this abstract surf painting reflects the feeling of a lip glide, trimming the top of the wave- fast and clean.

3. "Sunset Glide", this abstract surf painting reflects the peaceful yet energetic vibe of a West Coast evening glass off of the waves.

4. "Jade Pipe", this surf painting is an abstract representation of Gerry Lopez, a famous Hawaiian surfer, at Pipe, relaxed bottom turn in a huge overhead barrel of a wave.

5. "Peace on the Nose", this abstract surf painting captures the feeling of a peaceful, smooth, mellow nose ride on a wave somewhere in the tropics.

Hope that you enjoyed the tribal surf art of artist Bob Langston!

All of these psychedelic surf art originals are sold as prints on our Etsy store, ArtByLangston.

Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series from 2011

As a surfer, surf art is just a natural extension of Bob's creative mind..

Abstract is one of Bob's favorite forms of art as well..

So he came up with this style of tribal surf art and went with it! All are original paintings, acrylic on canvas.

The following are 5 out of the 10 original paintings (all originals have been sold but are now sold in print form on ArtByLangston) from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series that he created back in 2011...

1. "Cheater 5"; Our Feature Print for today on ArtByLangston, this abstract surf painting captures the stoke of "hanging five, toes over the nose" of the surfboard while riding a wave.

2. "Lopez at Pipeline", this abstract surf painting is a loose abstract representation of Gerry Lopez, also known as Mr. Pipeline, in a casual stance at Pipeline in Hawaii.

3. "Dawn Soul", this abstract surf painting captures the freedom of an expressive soulful nose ride while surfing an early morning East Coast wave.

4. "Sunrise Barrel", this abstract surf painting reflects the feeling of catching a deep barrel ride at the crack of dawn on an east coast wave.

5. "Emergence", this abstract surf painting captures the feel of a deep overhead barrel of a wave - emergence into the light.

There are the 5 for today. Stay tuned for 5 more tomorrow!

Hope that everyone has a happy and prosperous new year!!

Putting On the Finishing Touches

Currently, Bob has been painting a surfboard for a local client.

He finished the painting last night..

This morning, it was on to the outlining of the images. For that, he is using black oil based paint pen.

Took some pics..

Here they are!

Bob usually uses water-based acrylic paint pens for surfboard paintings, but this time decided to use enamel paints for the painting and the black oil-based paint pen for the outlining, which fits in perfectly since enamel paints are oil based. The red in the enamel paints was more vibrant than the acrylic paint pens. Wanted the board to pop!

This board should be completed today. Be sure to check back for more pics coming soon...after completion!

Finished Painting & An Artist Quote For Your Weekend

For a couple of days this past week, Bob painted a wheel cover for a client that he talked with at the past artshow at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Here it is, the finished product! Turned out awesome!

And here is an artist quote from Vincent Van Gogh for your weekend!

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”
― Vincent van Gogh

East Coast Surfing Championship Poster Art

In 2012, Vans and Coastal Edge decided to have a contest for the ECSC art, being that it was the 50th anniversary. Bob had done the art for the 49th ECSC the year before.  He entered, and won out of 45 contestants! Below are some pics of the painting process for the poster that Bob created for the event. Also pictured is the t shirt design, which he designed as well, based upon the poster.

Here is the design again, re created for t shirts. It also was used for the banners and scaffolding at the ECSC.

What the t-shirt looked like

Bob also did the artwork for the 49th ECSC as well. Below is the finished painting. They reproduced the painting later for posters, t shirts, hats and huge banners for the scaffolding and the front of the surf shop. The original painting is hanging in the Coastal Edge main office.

Here is the layout for the poster as well. The text, logos and all the rest of the tricking out was done by the graphics staff at Coastal Edge and Bob did the inital artwork.

Winning the 50th ECSC artwork contest was one of the greatest honors that Bob has been awarded.

Pen and Ink Sketch Art by Bob Langston

For the most part, Bob paints acrylic on canvas or on a surfboard or skateboard. But he also loves to draw sketches.

Here are several examples of pen and ink sketches Bob has done in recent years, including two that are giclee prints we sell on Etsy, at ArtByLangston!

The two above are prints from our Etsy store. "Wyld Collage 1" and "Wyld Collage 2". These drawings were many doodles that Bob created while speaking on the phone and then put together in one work of art.

More pen and ink sketches from Bob's collection:

"Another Bizarre Sketch" from the Bob archives

"Faces - melted twisted pilots"

"Space Monkey"

                                                                                     "Aye... Tis a Ghost"

Sketches from the unique mind that is Bob's.

Artist Quote of the Week: Leonardo DaVinci

Our Artist Quote of the Week is from Leonardo DaVinci, one of the greatest artists that ever lived. He was a talented artist and an inventor beyond his time!

“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci

Poetry paints a picture in your mind as you read it and paintings, as well as other forms of art, can speak to your heart and soul without saying a word.

Why I love art and poetry!
