5 More from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series 2011

Yesterday, I shared 5 of the 10 original acrylic paintings from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series..

Today, I will be sharing the other 5!

Most of these paintings hang in the Calypso Bar & Grill, here in Virginia Beach, on 11th St. and Atlantic, down at the Oceanfront..

If you are ever in the neighborhood, you should go and check them out!

1. "Throwin' Spray", this abstract surf painting captures the energy of hard cranking, snap off the lip of the wave.

2. "Lip Glide", this abstract surf painting reflects the feeling of a lip glide, trimming the top of the wave- fast and clean.

3. "Sunset Glide", this abstract surf painting reflects the peaceful yet energetic vibe of a West Coast evening glass off of the waves.

4. "Jade Pipe", this surf painting is an abstract representation of Gerry Lopez, a famous Hawaiian surfer, at Pipe, relaxed bottom turn in a huge overhead barrel of a wave.

5. "Peace on the Nose", this abstract surf painting captures the feeling of a peaceful, smooth, mellow nose ride on a wave somewhere in the tropics.

Hope that you enjoyed the tribal surf art of artist Bob Langston!

All of these psychedelic surf art originals are sold as prints on our Etsy store, ArtByLangston.

Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series from 2011

As a surfer, surf art is just a natural extension of Bob's creative mind..

Abstract is one of Bob's favorite forms of art as well..

So he came up with this style of tribal surf art and went with it! All are original paintings, acrylic on canvas.

The following are 5 out of the 10 original paintings (all originals have been sold but are now sold in print form on ArtByLangston) from Bob's Tribal Surf Art Series that he created back in 2011...

1. "Cheater 5"; Our Feature Print for today on ArtByLangston, this abstract surf painting captures the stoke of "hanging five, toes over the nose" of the surfboard while riding a wave.

2. "Lopez at Pipeline", this abstract surf painting is a loose abstract representation of Gerry Lopez, also known as Mr. Pipeline, in a casual stance at Pipeline in Hawaii.

3. "Dawn Soul", this abstract surf painting captures the freedom of an expressive soulful nose ride while surfing an early morning East Coast wave.

4. "Sunrise Barrel", this abstract surf painting reflects the feeling of catching a deep barrel ride at the crack of dawn on an east coast wave.

5. "Emergence", this abstract surf painting captures the feel of a deep overhead barrel of a wave - emergence into the light.

There are the 5 for today. Stay tuned for 5 more tomorrow!

Hope that everyone has a happy and prosperous new year!!

Putting On the Finishing Touches

Currently, Bob has been painting a surfboard for a local client.

He finished the painting last night..

This morning, it was on to the outlining of the images. For that, he is using black oil based paint pen.

Took some pics..

Here they are!

Bob usually uses water-based acrylic paint pens for surfboard paintings, but this time decided to use enamel paints for the painting and the black oil-based paint pen for the outlining, which fits in perfectly since enamel paints are oil based. The red in the enamel paints was more vibrant than the acrylic paint pens. Wanted the board to pop!

This board should be completed today. Be sure to check back for more pics coming soon...after completion!

East Coast Surfing Championship Poster Art

In 2012, Vans and Coastal Edge decided to have a contest for the ECSC art, being that it was the 50th anniversary. Bob had done the art for the 49th ECSC the year before.  He entered, and won out of 45 contestants! Below are some pics of the painting process for the poster that Bob created for the event. Also pictured is the t shirt design, which he designed as well, based upon the poster.

Here is the design again, re created for t shirts. It also was used for the banners and scaffolding at the ECSC.

What the t-shirt looked like

Bob also did the artwork for the 49th ECSC as well. Below is the finished painting. They reproduced the painting later for posters, t shirts, hats and huge banners for the scaffolding and the front of the surf shop. The original painting is hanging in the Coastal Edge main office.

Here is the layout for the poster as well. The text, logos and all the rest of the tricking out was done by the graphics staff at Coastal Edge and Bob did the inital artwork.

Winning the 50th ECSC artwork contest was one of the greatest honors that Bob has been awarded.

Surfboard and Skateboard Painting

Not only do we sell prints of Bob's artwork, he also has been custom painting surfboards and skateboards since 2009. This is one of his favorite mediums in recent years.

For his surfboard and skateboard paintings, he uses water based paint pens from Posca and Sharpie.

Where did he learn to paint boards? From Drew Brophy's Paint Pen Techniques with Drew Brophy. Drew shows you step-by-step, how to prepare, paint and seal any surface using water based paint pens. This was very instrumental in helping Bob get started with what he loves to do the most.

Surfboard Painting, Anyone?

Among Bob's other talents is the art of surfboard painting, using acrylic paint pens! Always a great gift idea for the surfers or lovers of surf art you have in your life!

Here are some wonderful examples of the past surfboard paintings that Bob has done, most of which hang on the walls of homes and businesses.

The first three boards that Bob finished in 2011.

Close up photos of three boards that Bob painted for
Steve Morris, a local Virginia Beach shaper.

Here is a board that Bob painted (yes, that is Bob posing under it) on
display in the lobby of a local movie theater here in VB, the
Beach Movie Bistro.

This is a surfboard that Bob painted in December 2011.
He decided to paint it with my his "tribal abstract surf" style
that he has used for many canvas paintings, this being the result.

Some Jimi Hendrix anyone? Bob had been wanting to paint a Jimi Hendrix portrait on a board
and got his chance during an annual board swap at a local surfshop, Austin Surfboards.
He painted this during the event, all while playing Jimi Hendrix music on the jam box.

Slyde HandBoards is a company from California that specializes in creating
boards specifically for bodysurfing. They sent Bob one and he painted it for them,
this being the result (top and lower decks) I know
it it not a surfboard but too cool not to share!

Hope you enjoy seeing what other amazing artwork my husband is capable of! One of his favorite forms of art to do!

Print of the Day 11/22/13, From ArtByLangston: "Kona's Longboard"

Looking out the door at a beautiful, sunny day. Hope that the sun is shining down on all of you today as well.

Here we go with the Print of the Day, from our ArtByLangston Etsy store.

Our print of the day is called "Kona's Longboard".

Always fascinated with tikis, Bob painted this whimsical figure with acrylic on thin wood, mounted to a patterned grey board. As you can see, Kona is ready for a good day of surf in the ocean, longboard under his arm and a big smile on his face.

As always, the print is signed by the artist.

ArtByLangston Print of the Day: "Dolphins Leaping"

Every day at ArtByLangston, we have a featured Print of the Day that we like to share to give you a taste of the colorful, vibrant artwork we have available on our Etsy store. All are prints of original surf, beach and abstract paintings, as well as pen and ink sketches created by Bob.

Today's Print of the Day is "Dolphins Leaping", a giclee print that comes in sizes 18" x 24" or 8 1/2" x 11". The inspiration for this painting was the thought that dolphins are our friends here in the surf of Virginia Beach. So Bob decided to create a painting of these playful sea creatures enjoying their time in the waves. The original ocean painting, much in the style of his Tribal Surf Series, was created using acrylic paint on gallery wrapped canvas. This is a limited edition print, so Bob signs and numbers each one that he sells. This print is limited to 100 prints.

While you are there, you can view the rest of our selection of fine art prints avaliable at ArtByLangston!
